With his characteristic combination of philosophical acuity, psychological insight, and wry humor, Frankfurt proceeds by exploring how bullshit and the related concept of humbug are distinct from lying. He argues that bullshitters misrepresent themselves to their audience not as liars do, that is, by deliberately making false claims about what is true. In fact, bullshit need not be untrue at all. Rather, bullshitters seek to convey a certain impression of themselves without being concerned about whether anything at all is true. They quietly change the rules governing their end of the conversation so that claims about truth and falsity are irrelevant.

Liars at least acknowledge that it matters what is true. By virtue of this, Frankfurt writes, bullshit is a greater enemy of the truth than lies are. Augustine and the spy novelist Eric Ambler, among others, to ask some of the preliminary questions—to define the nature of a thing recognized by all but understood by none. What is bullshit, after all? Frankfurt points out it is neither fish nor fowl. Those who produce it certainly aren't honest, but neither are they liars, given that the liar and the honest man are linked in their common, if not identical, regard for the truth. Frankfurt's conclusion. is that bullshit is defined not so much by the end product as by the process by which it is created. Frankfurt's definition is one of those not-at-all-obvious insights that become blindingly obvious the moment they are expressed.

Beautifully written, lucid, ironic and profound, it is a model of what philosophy can and should do. It is a small and highly provocative masterpiece, and I really don't think I am bullshitting you here. Bullshit is now such a dominant feature of our culture that most of us are confident we can recognize and rebuff it. But Frankfurt shows the reader just how insidious and destructive it can be. This book will change your life. Despite his subject, he is definitely not full of it. Needless to say, there are numerous problems which may be expanded, looked into and analyzed concerning bullshit.

And I dare say that Frankfurt's little book is a nice starting point. Naessan, Philosophy Now. The analysis is strict and philosophical with the clear intention of seeking the truth. I'm sure he had a blast writing it, and the droll prose is a tasty treat. If you are fed up with hype, spin and bullshit this book will provide insight - and therapy. Has anything truer ever been written? This is the work of an extraordinarily acute, attentive, and versatile philosopher who has succeeded in addressing an audience comprised of both other philosophers and the general public on a topic of considerable human interest in a characteristically wry and engaging way.

It is one of the most enjoyable and humanly illuminating short pieces of philosophy produced in the past fifty years.

Aspects of the bullshit problem are discussed partly with reference to the Oxford English Dictionary , Wittgenstein and Saint Augustine. Three points seem especially important — the distinction between lying and bullshitting, the question of why there is so much bullshit in the current day and age, and a critique of sincerity qua bullshit. Frankfurt makes an important distinction between lying and bullshitting. Both the liar and the bullshitter try to get away with something. Furthermore, a lie is necessarily false, but bullshit is not — bullshit may happen to be correct or incorrect.

The crux of the matter is that bullshitters hide their lack of commitment to truth. Since bullshitters ignore truth instead of acknowledging and subverting it, bullshit is a greater enemy of truth than lies. Frankfurt is non-committal as to whether there is more bullshit around now than before, but he maintains that there is currently a great deal. There is an interesting problem sketched at the end of the book, wherein sincerity is described as an ideal for those who do not believe that there is any objective truth, thus departing from the ideal of correctness. Be this as it may, when a person rejects the notion of being true to the facts and turns instead to an ideal of being true to their own substantial and determinate nature, then according to Frankfurt this sincerity is bullshit.

Bullshit seems to be defined largely negatively, that is, as not lying. It is predominantly about the intention and disregard for truth of the bullshitter. How then do we discern bullshit from other types of speech behaviour? Is it really possible to accurately know the values or lack thereof involved when a person speaks? Probably not. One may have some intuition that certain utterances constitute bullshit. Grice might provide some further food for thought within the emerging field of bullshitology as I would like to call the scientific study of bullshit. Speakers and listeners assume that the others abide by certain, predominantly unstated, speech norms.

The cooperative principle can be divided more specifically into the maxims of quantity, quality, relevance, and manner. For bullshitological purposes, the violation of the maxims would appear to be relevant. So if utterances convey not enough or too much information quantity , are intentionally false or lack evidence quality , are irrelevant to any current topic or issue relevance , and are obscure, ambiguous, unnecessarily wordy or disorderly manner , they would seem to qualify, although not necessarily, as bullshit minus the intentionally false utterance, of course. Needless to say, there are numerous problems which may be expanded, looked into and analysed concerning bullshit.

But for the sake of completeness, here goes. The bullshitter differs from both liars and people presenting the truth with their disregard of the truth. The main difference between the two is intent and deception. As I said, section II is the only important one. By virtue of this, Frankfurt writes, bullshit is a greater enemy of the truth than lies are. Already have a WordPress.
