Her breath came in short gasps, refusing help from a breathing mask and the people around her. We sat around her bed in silence, not even the crickets of the darkening sky daring to make a sound. Exhaustion pulled at everyone in the room, willing us to close our eyes for a mere three seconds until our bodies gave in to the blanket the darkness that sleep granted. Unable to bear the sounds of heavy footsteps and the wiz of the poorly powered fan, I began to look back on all the memories I shared with this woman. I could sit there for hours, relaxing to the sound of her laugh or throwing my voice in with hers when she would sing an old song I grew accustomed to hearing.
For years, she provided long talks and advice that no one else could offer. For years, she was my safe place. Perseverance and a strong spirit had been methodically etched by God into the essence of this beautiful woman. These characteristics are only gained through overcoming challenges by which her accomplishments display. Delays often came that made her progress slow, but her persistence made both her, and her love, sure and steady. Last night my grandmother, Kasper, or Kas for short, passed away. She was 79 years old. But, It still sucks. Did I mention that she graduated with honors? Never conforming, she conquered the obstacles that were thrown in her path to achieve her goals and provide for her family; which I found to be extremely selfless. It was her influence that eventually instituted the type of mother I wanted to be for my future children; which I always dreamed of.
That living and loving strong was once her parents. They always stayed involved with each other trusting their love to carry them throughout their lives. They were so compassionate, communicative, and got through conflicts quietly and privately. They loved each other immensely. I brought her to chemotherapy treatments. I chatted with her about school and the classes I was excited to start next year. Throughout her fight she never made anything about her; she always focused on me and how I was doing. I used to watch her in the kitchen every holiday, making a dinner for twenty-five without breaking a sweat. Eventually I watched her struggle, needing more help than she wanted to ask for. I witnessed her become victim to cancer, I never lost sight of the woman she was and neither did she, strong.
My grandma has always been my best friend ever since I could speak. Saturday was the best day of the week. We walked into Steak and Shake, while the smell of grease filling our noses. After that, we went right across the street to Coldstone, and I got a cotton candy ice cream with gummy bears. The ice cream was sweet and creamy. We moved over to Starbucks where coffee and we talked with my aunt about anything you could imagine. Things changed as I aged and my cousin were born, but we were still best friends.
